Roots is designed to help pass along the heritage of "Bluegrass Music" by offering 6-8 week long sessions that provide beginning instruction for banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and upright bass.
The basics learned in our classes can be used and applied with many other styles of music.
We use a variety of teaching technniques and original materials. The classes focus on the big picture; not just playing the instrument, but understanding it's role in an ensemble or jam, which can enhance musical enjoyment by providing an opportunity to participate in a musical community .
Students of all ages learn how to tune their instrument and make chords. There is an educational focus on chord structure, transitioning between chords, chord progressions, anticipating chord changes, changing keys, following familiar and unfamiliar songs, and learning all about jamming etiquette.
About Bluegrass
Bluegrass evolved from the many different musical styles that were brought to this country by immigrants of the 1600 and 1700's. Folk songs and ballads arrived from the British Isles, instumental jazz tunes found their way across the ocean from Scotland, Ireland and England, and sounds of the banjo entered the country through African field songs.
Traditionally, this music was played and passed on through the generations entirely by ear, without written notation of any kind and was learned out of experience in a group context. The music they carried with them was their primary form of entertainment and it brought joy and community into a world laden with hard work.
The melding together of these many different sounds and styles resulted in this original, true American music called Bluegrass. It's a music that blends sounds, voices and personalities in the traditional method of learning one rift at a time from seasoned musicians.
With its roots running deep, it is still evolving today. Besides the solid traditional sounds, it has recently pulled in more modern sounds to make what is now referred to as "newgrass" or "progressive" bluegrass, which adds contemporary flavor and style.
"A successful musician is a person who enjoys playing music"
